Areas of Focus

Joel specializes in the Venezuelan oil market, providing industry players and newcomers with information and advisory on Mergers & Acquisition and Joint Ventures (Mixed Companies) opportunities and strategies. He is also focused on Corporate Finance issues such as financing strategies (including Project Finance and ECA’s), economic evaluation of projects and valuation of companies and assets.

Previous Work Experience

Prior to joining IPD, Joel worked with PDVSA for twenty (20) years within the Corporate Finance and Corporate Planning departments. He held different positions at the Corporate Finance department focusing on financial planning (economic evaluation of projects and cash flow analysis and forecast), budgeting and accounting. After getting his MBA in the UK in 2003, he returned to the Corporate Planning Department of PDVSA as a Senior Advisor and later on as a Corporate Manager focusing on financing strategies, PDVSA cash flow analysis and forecast, oil market analysis for Venezuelan OPEC officials, monitoring of Venezuelan crude oil production, market studies for Venezuelan crude oil and products, crude oil price forecast, amongst others.

During his time in PDVSA, Joel led the negotiation team for a US$ 3.5 billion transaction with the Japan Bank for International Co-operation (JBIC), and promoted PDVSA’s business plan amongst foreign investors and stakeholders. He also led the following studies:

·          Analysis of Potential Partners for the Development of the Orinoco Belt and Off-shore gas fields.

·          Statistical Analysis of the gap between Secondary Sources & Direct Communication on Venezuelan production figures.

·          Mid-&-Long Term Market Opportunities for Venezuelan Crudes & Petroleum Products.

·          Impact of Global Financial Crisis on the Oil Market and the Venezuelan Economy.

Additionally, Joel led on behalf of PDVSA, the organization of the World Heavy Oil Congress 2009 along with dmg world media (the Canadian company responsible for the organization of these events around the world) and was a keynote speaker at NOC-IOC Summit, London (2008) organized by CWC.

Education

Joel holds an MBA from Manchester Business School in the UK (2003), a MSc in Finance from Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Administracion - IESA (1999) and a BA Business Administration from Universidad Santa Maria – USM (1995). He also attended a Negotiation Program at Harvard Business School (2004/2005) and the O&G MBA at Institut Français du Pétrole – IFP (2006).
